About Me

This is where I’m supposed to tell you about me.  Stuff like how I’m happily married and a mother of two and I was born on a Monday and it was cloudy.  All of that.  But, really, this is already all about me.  This whole blog thing.  Pretty self-centered, eh?

But maybe I should tell you here about where I get off trying to sell myself as a writer.  My resume, if you will:

  • Well, I’ve written a ton of feature stories for magazines (none that you’ve heard of).  If you Google top five things to look for when buying a digital camera, you might find me.  My parents are so proud.
  • I spent my early career in politics and worked as a speechwriter.  You know that speech where President Reagan said, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!  Gives you goosebumps, doesn’t it?  Yeah, I didn’t write that.   No, I was in 7th grade social studies class watching it from an audio/video cart.  But it inspired me when I had to write speeches — speeches like why liberals suck.  (Important, because I am one.)
  • For the past six years I’ve worked for a charitable grant-making foundation where I review grant proposals and write up evaluations about

This old milk campaign lied to me. I still look like the girl on the right.

nonprofit-led ventures.  (Feel free to just vaguely nod along here.  Even my family and friends don’t get what I do.)  I love my day job.  But you may be surprised to learn I don’t get many opportunities there to write about Cabbage Patch Kids or Shaun Cassidy.  I know, isn’t that a shame?  Enter, my blog.

  • Here are a few other relevant things you should know.  I’m also an award-winning short story writer (see here), an award-winning essayist (see here), an award-winning copywriter (see here), and have carried out a successful written lobbying campaign (see here).  I usually try to downplay these accomplishments so I don’t come off as bragging.  Well, and also there’s the fact that most of these things occurred when I was in grade school.  Oh, that, and plagiarism might have had something to do with at least one of them.

Since you’ve mentioned Shaun Cassidy, I’m now compelled to subscribe to your blog. I was going to marry Shaun Cassidy when I was three. You would think I’d be bitter since he turned down my proposal, but no, I still love Shaun Cassidy.

  2. October 16, 2011 6:29 am

Well, now. You have sold me. First, I noticed your avatar picture is an old school photo. I used to have mine up there as well, complete with my tortoise-shell framed glasses, butterfly collar and blonde hair. Second, you’ve mentioned Shaun Cassidy a few times. I professed my undying love for him in my post, How I Survived My Brothers. And I’d like you to know he is all mine, sorry. Third, I really should stop counting because it’s getting annoying. So to sum up, I love your blog.

    • October 16, 2011 2:26 pm

Wow! Nothing like checking my blog today and having all these nice comments waiting for my “approval.” Yes, I noticed when I saw you on FP that your blog has a similar theme (parenting, pop culture, childhood). Although, you can take credit for being around a lot longer than me. In blogworld that is; that’s not an age jab (because I think you’re a bit older than I am, heehee). Thanks for reading!

      • August 1, 2013 11:42 am

Wow. This is where it all began, Angie. (sniff, sniff)

God, I was such a dork back then!

  3. October 31, 2011 11:02 am

I love this blog Angie! You are right – it IS nice to see that others have taken the time to write about things from the “good old days” such as the Sears Wish Book and JC Penney Catalogs of the 80s. I appreciate you commenting on my blog, I haven’t posted there since June or July. I have since launched a website for children of the 80s called I currently have 6 contributors who basically have their own blogs and just send me stuff they’ve already written to re-post for new eyes. If you’d like to have any of your pieces posted on our site I’d be honored to have them (of course crediting you as author). Let me know – – and feel free to check out the site! We have a podcast as well!

Thanks, HowardtheDeck (nice name)! I will absolutely check out that site and would love to contribute some time. Glad you stopped by my blog!

Hey Angie, I just noticed your little news clipping shows Broken Bow, NE. Do you live in NE still? I’m originally from Omaha. :)

      • December 29, 2011 8:01 pm

I love Omaha — what a great city! I go back there to visit friends a lot. I spent most of my life in Nebraska.

  7. January 16, 2012 1:59 pm

Hi Angie, I’m in Northeast NE… fun blog you have here.

Nice Blog, Nice photos… I was born in ’78… I had three older brothers, so after giving birth to my third boy I was tricked that the fourth would be a girl… now I have four boys. Thank God I had those brothers to teach me what all this is about.
I’m just starting up with this blog thing and have yet to write on much of anything, and certainly not anything of the cultural geography I love… but it will all come eventually. Now I need to go before my toddler gets into my crayons, again.

    • January 17, 2012 2:07 pm

Yep, that sounds like chaos right there. Good luck with that. No, really, sometimes it sounds fun. I have enough pets though that this is all I can handle. Best wishes on your new blog.

Awww, thank you! Your support and kind shout-outs really mean a lot to me.

  12. February 4, 2012 11:08 pm

You know what’s weird? I’m trolling through your site, and on top of seeing a lot of super witty writing, I also see an abnormal amount of the same people making comments on both of our blogs. Do we know each other? Are you, by chance, my creepy neighbor who never comes out of the house? Just curious. Either way, great stuff. =)

    • February 5, 2012 5:58 pm

Hmmmm…you do look awfully familiar. Maybe that was you who did that riveting timeshare presentation that my husband and I attended in Kauai about 2002? You introduced yourself as “Summer Joy” and then later we heard your manager call you “Stacie”. Wasn’t that you?

  13. February 9, 2012 3:17 pm

I’m in awe…we should bow down to your presence and award wall. :)

Sounds like we group up during the same time and have a a couple of kids. We might understand (enjoy) each other’s posts. Although, I’m not an award winning anything. I’m just me with a lot to say. It’s funny. Well, I’m a legend in my own mind anyway. I find myself incredibly amusing.

Hopefully we’ll become blogging pals! Signing up to follow your posts. Come by and holler at me sometime!

To say I was happy to find your blog would really be underselling it. I have two reasons to be happy. (1) Your blog is great, and (2) I am trapped in a similar world to yours and it partially vindicates my own pathological obsession (vindicates here should be loosely defined). Love your work.

    • February 11, 2012 2:19 pm

Thanks, John-Paul! Do you have a blog? If not, you should get one and wax poetic about your own childhood. It’s very cleansing and good for the soul. My soul has just ordered a new pair of purple legwarmers as a result.

But of course. Man of Errors. Funny you should mention legwarmers – I once wrote about the shame of being a boy who wore legwarmers.

      • February 11, 2012 3:16 pm

Wait, how do I get to it? It isn’t linked from your gravatar. Is it Is it via WordPress? What is the internet and what is a computer? Is it like that large box that spits out money at the bank? These are all questions I need to answer before I can find your blog.

    • May 13, 2012 10:20 am

  22. May 21, 2012 1:05 pm

I’m in! I had a bet with my best friend that I would marry Shaun Cassidy ( and I wasn’t no 3 year old, I was at least 12. I loved him. Love yer blog. Very fun. Very blonde.

    • May 22, 2012 12:35 pm

Yeah, I don’t know that, at such a young age, I loved him like I thought I did. It might’ve been the fact that his name just went really well with my swingset chant. In other words, I think you have a much better claim on him. Okay, I’m off to read your teen idol post to see how my list stacks up.

      Thanks for subscribing.

    Dear Angie, c/o Childhood Relived,

You have made it to my blogroll for your attention to the craft of Storytelling. Thank you for your reflections on the human experience.

I feel like we have lived parallel lives; I am frequently reminded of my royal blue and fuchsia leg warmers when I read your work.

Life lived ass-backwards is fun and full of surprises which shouldn’t actually be surprises. Take for instance, reading tons of posts on someone’s blog, following them, and THEN reading their “about” page. Yeah!…that’s how I roll!

You grew up in Nebraska?!?! Wow!! I had a traumatic childhood memory there, and drove through it once in the dead of night!

    • August 20, 2012 10:57 am

Yeah, I know. I do that too. It’s like you don’t even know someone until you read their About page and discover they buy the same brand of peanut butter as you.

You’re going to have to write about that Nebraska trauma on your blog someday. Yet another blog post that you’ll have to credit me for. Please tell me this one won’t also involve dogs pooping out condoms.

Wait…I suppose by “trauma” you may mean a legitimate trauma, as opposed to just having to walk through the Buffalo Bill museum and look at stuffed badgers. In which case, by all means leave that story between you and your therapist.

      • August 20, 2012 1:02 pm

You can rest assured that the story does not involve condoms, badgers or badgers wearing condoms as party hats.

As usual, I’m a day late and a dollar short. I, too, nominated you for the Liebster Blog Award since I didn’t see any indication of it on your home page. Then again, I had waaay too much fun in the 70’s so it’s entirely possible I just missed it. If you care to check it out, here’s the short link: If it’s not your glass of Tab I totally understand, just wanted to let you know I think you’re groovier than Marcia Brady.
